Benzalkonium chloride is a quaternary ammonium compound used in pharmaceutical formulations as an antimicrobial preservative in applications similar to other cationic surfactants. Solutions containing benzalkonium chloride are active against wide range of bacteria, yeasts and fungi. Activity is more marked against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria and minimal against bacterial endospores and acid-fast bacteria. The primary use of Benzalkonium Chloride is as an antimicrobial agent which on application, effectively terminates harmful microorganisms, curbs their replication, and with its excellent detergency, appears as a main ingredient in various disinfectant formulations. It demonstrates superior anti-bactericidal, anti-fungal and anti-viral attributes within limited contact period even at lower use concentration.
